As a graduate of Durham University’s MISCADA program, I am truly grateful for the solid foundation it laid for my career. The main goal of the prize is to sup­port excel­lent stu­dents in the field of Com­puta­tional Sci­ence and Engi­neer­ing (CSE) and to foster inter­na­tional ex­change at an early career level. Mas­ter’s stu­dents as well as Ph.D. can­di­dates are eligi­ble for the prize and have to sub­mit a short paper of 4 pages. Out of these sub­mis­sions, a BGCE board se­lects the final­ists who pre­sent their work in two spe­cial BGCE Stu­dent Paper Prize mini­sym­posia of the SIAM CS&E con­fer­ence.

My time at Durham University’s MISCADA program helped me become a well-rounded data scientist, building up my expertise in computer hardware, machine learning, performance optimization, and statistics. By diving into high-performance computing, data science, and programming, I learned how to harness structured and unstructured data to create and deploy high-accuracy, real-time machine learning models. This experience shaped my ability to deliver research-backed solutions that address industry-specific challenges, and it’s served me incredibly well in my professional career as a data scientist ever since.

The MISACADA course has been transformative for my career, bridging my background in electronics and embedded software engineering with advanced scientific computing and algorithm development. This integrated skill set enabled me to successfully implement real-time algorithms for animal welfare monitoring in my previous role, resulting in improvement health and monitoring for chickens and bees. Now, these capabilities will be instrumental in developing sophisticated wind measurement systems.

“I really appreciated the flexibility of the degree. It enabled me to study my particular interests (scientific computing) in a greater depth than would otherwise have been possible. As a previous physics undergraduate I also enjoyed the opportunity to learn some more advanced particle physics.

The final project has been particularly useful. I’ve been able to really drill down into a particular topic and it’s given me a great opportunity to work with academics on a project with real value.

The skills I’ve learnt this year will be very helpful for my upcoming PhD in scientific computing.”

Ich habe den Miscada Kurs mit der Spezialisierung Astrophysic 2019/2020 besucht. Die ersten beiden Terms (Trimester) bestanden aus jeweils zwei 4 Wochenblöcken, gefolgt von einem 1 Wochen Block mit den Professional Skills. Die 4-Wochenblöcke beinhalten regelmäßige “formative” (nicht zur Endnote zählende) Assignments zum erproben des Gelernten, gefolgt von einer “summative” Abgabe die in die Endnote eingeht. Dieses Modell empfand ich als sehr vorteilhaft, da man gegenüber dem konventionellen Prüfungsbasierten Studium regelmäßig das Gelernte anwedet, dadurch besser versteht und weniger schnell vergisst. Zusätzlich, konträr zu einem Prüfungsbasierten Studium, hat man regelmäßig das Gefühl etwas erreicht zu haben und ist dadurch motivierter etwas zu lernen. Im Miscada Kurs war es für mich möglich viel Wissen aufzunehmen und ich fühle mich vorbereitet dieses in realen Szenarien anzuwenden. Einstellbarkeit ist nach dem Kurs definitiv gegeben. Die vielen Linkedin-Anfragen die ich und auch andere Kursmitglieder bereits erhalten haben zeigen definitiv ein starkes Interesse an dem was in dem Kurs gelehrt wird.
